bugs feed on blood alone and it has been found that if kept cool bed bugs can survive 12 months without eating any more blood. Unfortunately they are more active when you are in bed asleep. Let us Exterminate your bed bugs and we can show you how to kill bed bugs the professional way.

They are so small they can hide in the smallest holes or gaps, especially in bed rooms, in mattresses, sheets, pillows, chairs, drawers, in fact any furniture in the bedroom. And can hide anywhere and come out at night. They are quite prevalent in hotels, moving from one room to another in laundry trolleybus or guest luggage.

A bed bug infestation can be spotted with the trained eye if  you know what you are looking for and we do, those little critters are very small and ugly. You can spot them as adults or when they are growing by finding their skin they have shed. Also when they finish feeding they go back to their hiding place and defecate leaving brown or black stains behind..

And bed bugs bite and take blood, so red marks on your body or hose of your family may indicate bed bugs.

How do you get bed bugs?

It is easy to pick up bed bugs as they live all over the place, in hotels, gyms, offices, stores, homes, hospitals just to begin with. And they are amazing at hiding and moving on various hosts. Once they get into your home they are extremely difficult to eradicate unless you know what you are doing. It is possible to exterminate them if you get them early and before a bed bug infestation occurs.

Advice to prevent a bed bug infestation

  1. Declutter your home and restrict bed bug hiding places and make them easier to find
  2. Use the very hot temperature when washing linen from the bed
  3. Check closely any furniture that isn’t new before it enters the house
  4. After trips or guests or calls made by service people always thoroughly check your home

How bad can it get with Bed bugs?

Bed bug females can lay up to 35 eggs a week and up to 500 eggs before they die. In the right conditions and with food they can live for almost a year. So each female could potentially produce 500 eggs each. That’s why they need to be exterminated early.

Bed bugs do not transmit diseases to human’s, although they do carry diseases themselves.

Bed bugs feed on blood and therefore want to live close to us, the bed bug bites can have different affects depending on the individual being bitten. Some reactions are quite bad, some not so much. Either way it is an unpleasant experience.

How do I know if I have Termites!
How do I know if Termites are eating my house!

You wake in the night. All is quiet, dark and still. Your dog is asleep at the foot of your bed, he groans in his sleep. You listen carefully, you can hear the beat of your heart. You hold your breath and all you here is a deafening silence. You know they are there. You can sense them. Termites!

Every home owner in Santa Barbara has some concern that his house is being eaten by termites. The United States spends an estimated $2billion dollars a year to defend and protect homes from these winged insects. Termites have an insatiable appetite for all things woody. Warding off termites seems like a colossal task. Termite colonies can start off small and reach populations of millions. Each of these millions of termites is working hard to ruin your life and your home.

We curse the existence of termites but we are the ones to blame for the existence of them in our homes. Termites are voracious wood eaters and serve a distinct purpose in forest ecosystems. They break down dead trees, allowing new ones to grown in their place. When we clear forest and woodland areas to build houses we are giving termites a dinner plate full of wood and more wood. Termites simply follow their survival instincts and seek out their food source.

But this doesn’t answer your question does it? You want to know whether termites have entered your house and started feasting on your home. So how do you know if termites are eating your house ?

These insects live in a structured society with a king and a queen at the top. The other members of the society are divided into reproductives and soldiers. Some types of termites also have a worker class. Once they have popped out of their eggs and begin developing wings they have a pretty easy time of it. Reproductives have wings and can fly off and form their own colonies. They usually seek out a new home in late summer or fall, or sometimes in spring creating swarms. A swarm is the first sure sign of a termite problem. This is the termites hunting in droves to find a new home and form a colony.

Whether some reproductive termites or a whole swarm has settled into the woodwork of your home they have one of their basic needs covered. Shelter. They also need a food and a water source. Depending on the type of termite, a water source doesn’t mean a lake or a river, damp wood can be enough of a water source for some termites. Termites need moisture as they are a fragile creature and can easily dry out. Here is another clue as to whether you have termites in your house. Mud tubes. These hollow tubes act as runways, protecting the termites from heat and dryness as they move between their food source and their nest. Their food source is the cellulose found in wood. The mud tubes shows you that subterranean termites have left their calling cards. You will usually find them running up from the ground along foundation blocks in your basement or inside walls in your house. Follow the tunnel all the way up and you will find that it terminates at a structural beam or a floor joist. When you reach a piece of wood, tap it with a screwdriver. If it makes a hollow sound, try inserting the screwdriver. If it goes in easy termites have hollowed out the delicious inside of the wood, leaving the less delicious hard exterior.

At this point you should call your pest control specialist. You will need a qualified exterminator to eradicate the termites. You should see these termites as your enemy and do everything you can to get rid of them.

What types of rodents can infest my house or yard!

Well there are quite a few how about Rats, Moles, Gophers and Mice for starters.

Rats: Rats are extremely persistent and can transmit a number of serious diseases. Once they gain access to your property rats can cause damage, contaminate food and spread disease. Amazingly a pair of rats can shed 1  million body hairs in a year and a single rat alone can leave 25,000 droppings in a year. At the first sign of rats you MUST take action and call in a professional firm of exterminators.

Do you think you have rats? Here are some signs to help identify if you have a rat problem or not.

Rats are most active between dusk and dawn. You will probably see signs of an active rat or rats rather than see the creature itself. If you do see a rat, then the chances are there are likely to be more than one. You must act promptly and call in a pest control firm before the matter gets out of hand. Rats are well known to spread disease, damage property, contaminate food stuffs including pet foods. If rats are able to find a way into your house or yard, remember they may also introduce disease carrying parasites onto your property. This means they could be carrying, fleas, ticks and lice. A pest control company will take care of your rat problem with targeted treatments.

Learn to identify the most important signs that indicate you have a rat infestation on your property.

Footprints: Rats leave footprints and tail marks in dusty, less used areas of buildings. Shine a strong flashlight to reveal footprints clearly. To test if the infestation is still active, sprinkle some talcum powder or flour near the track marks and test the next day for fresh ones.

Scratching Noises: some rats are agile climbers, they can gain access in attic spaces the upper floors of buildings. Scratching noises at night may be an indication of their presence. Some types of rats on the other hand may be less agile climbers and are more likely to be identified by a chattering or grinding noise they make with their teeth known as bruxing. This can be heard as they scurry under decking, sheds or floorboards.

Rat droppings: can be found in concentrated areas. Rats can produce up to 40 droppings a night. Most rat droppings are brown in colour, with a tapered spindle, shape. They resemble a large grain of rice.

Burrows: Brown rats are well known for digging and excavating burrows for shelter, food storage and nesting. They build burrows next to solid structures like garden sheds, decking and garages. They can also be found in secluded, well vegetated areas such as wasteland and gardens.

Rub Marks: Rats use established routes along skirting boards and walls due to their poor eyesight. Grease and dirt on their bodies leave smudge marks on objects and surfaces they repeatedly rub against them. These marks may indicate a rodent presence but as they last a long time they may not necessarily be an indicator of an active infestation.

If you are worried about rats you need to act quickly to keep the level of infestation under control, and reduce the health risk imposed by rats. You can take practical steps now to reduce the risk of rat infestation in your home or business premises. Knowing you have rats can be distressing, so it is best to try to do everything you can to avoid the situation in the first place. The best way to deter rats is to deny them access to food and water and shelter. Unlike mice, rats need daily access to a water source. They only drink between 15ml and 60ml of water a day but they need to access it regularly and consistently. They are known to eat anything but rats prefer to eat a small amount of a wide variety of foods giving them a varied diet.

Here are some practical tips to help rodent infestation in your home or business premises.

  1. Put outdoor rubbish bags in metal bins with securely fitting lids to stop rats feeding on the contents
  2. Keep yards free from rubbish and clutter as much as possible
  3. Clean up pet food and bird feeding debris, store pet food in strong containers with sealing lids. Preferably above ground level.
  4. Keep all foodstuffs in metal or glass containers with tight fitting lids
  5. If you have a compost heap do not include organic food waste as this will attract rats
  6. Tidy inside the house and around the yard - less clutter means less places for rats to hide.
  7. If you have already spotted signs of rat infestation such as droppings, prevention may already be too late.
  8. Act quickly to get rid of rats and to prevent a larger infestation

Deterring rats: Rats are nimble, versatile and will take any opportunity to get into your property.
Black rats are good climbers and will happily inhabit lofts and attics. Brown rats can also climb but prefer to build burrows, particularly near or beneath solid structures like cellars, garages, sheds and walls. They are very adept swimmers in sewers and drain systems, making the most of any damaged pipe work. Rodents gnaw and rats will gnaw at any gaps to enlarge them for easy entry.

Rat Proof Your Property:
  • Gaps in exterior walls: small openings around utility outlets such as cables or pipe work need to be filled with stainless steel wire wool and concrete or caulking. Steel or aluminium plating can be used. Rats can jump so check up to a height of about 4 feet.
  • Roofs: Rats climb along overhanging branches or exterior cables to get into loft or attic spaces through gaps, under eaves or broken roof tiles. Repair any roof damage and seal gaps with wire mesh.
  • Drains and Sewer Pipes: Rats have been known to swim along damaged sewer pipes and get round u-bends in toilets. Get into the habit of keeping toilet lids closed. They will also get up drain pipes and drainage outlets. Use tightly fitting metal grates or screens to cover drains, especially in basement areas. Regularly check pipe work and ensure any damage is repaired.
  • Entrances: Young rats can squeeze through small gaps under doorways. As a deterrent fit strips to the bottom of doors. They will also use cat flaps to get in. Rats will enlarge gaps by gnawing to enter homes by integral garages.

Moles, Gophers, Ground Squirrels and Voles :

Got gophers, moles or voles?
Have you got pocket gophers in your vegetable beds, moles tearing up the lawn, and voles gnawing on your fruit trees?

These creatures are active all year round, they industriously expand their burrows and damage your turf. They can transmit diseases and cause property damage. Make their removal a priority when ruined plantings, dirt mounds or failing turf is discovered. While it may be convenient to view some products as a convenient way to get rid of these creatures, most of these products are poisonous to pets, wildlife and humans. Instead call out a professional company of pest control experts to eradicate your problem using targeted techniques. Take some preventative measures such as selecting neutral plants, encouraging the presence of natural predators, and building wire barriers.

California ground squirrels, California Voles, moles and gophers can cause extensive damage to landscapes in California. Their burrows and tunnels not only damage your plants and lawns, but can at times, present a hazard to humans and large animals, such as horses and cattle. Tripping over a mound can easily result in a fall and  cause injury, a broken leg or ankle or worse. You need to call a pest control company experienced in dealing with and controlling these nuisance animals. You need to give yourself the peace of mind that your landscape and you are just a little bit safer.

Moles: Moles are usually more difficult to deal with than gophers. And may need follow up monitoring and secondary applications of control materials but can be addressed with great effectiveness. There are some products that have been developed in the last 5 years that mimic a mole’s natural food source and provide a greater level of control.

Gophers: Gophers are highly active from early spring through to early summer months although can be found plaguing Southern California homeowners all year round in many areas. Pocket Gophers will cause widespread damage to ornamental plantings and lawns and will contribute to an overall unhealthy appearance to landscaped areas. Gophers have also been known to contribute to the undermining of soil and soil erosion in some areas.

Ground Squirrels: Although these creatures are seen as cute and entertaining they are unfortunately one of the most destructive ground burrowing rodents that exist. Their burrowing activity directly attributes to damage to landscape, foundation walls, driveways, patios etc

Voles: Voles live outdoors and feed on seeds and shrubbery. The most common damage caused by voles are tell tale cuts or patterns of trails in lawns by their foraging activity. Voles will commonly damage your grass, seedlings, shrubs and plants.

If you think you have been infested with any of the above small animals, don’t try to tackle the problem yourself with poisonous remedies, contact your local pest control company at once.

Call a professional pest control company to rid you of the infestation.

How do I know if I have fleas in my house?

The first place to look for fleas in on your pet. Take a comb and part the fur and fleas will run in the opposite direction to hide. You may need a special flea comb with extra small teeth to look properly for the fleas. Flea combs are easy to use, but you need to be prepared to dispose of any live fleas that get trapped in the teeth of the comb. So here is what you do:

1. Start at your pet’s head, near the ears. Also check near the tail and under the legs.
2. Quickly run the comb backwards through the fur
3. Then before the fleas have a chance to spring loose, immediately dip the comb into a bowl containing a solution of liquid dish soap mixed into a small amount of water
4. Any fleas that are trapped in the teeth will die in the soapy water
5. Repeat for as long as your pet will tolerate your dragging a wet comb through it’s fur

To detect fleas in your house, put on a pair of white knee-highs and walk around in your stocking feet. Fleas are attracted to white clothing, plus they are much easier to see against a white background.

Cat fleas: Appearance. The cat flea is about 2mm in length and is mahogany in colour and is laterally compressed in shape. It’s head is smoothly rounded and has prominent black eyes. The flea has long, strong hind legs for jumping.
The cat flea goes through a complete metamorphosis in it’s life cycle. The stages are egg - larva - pupa - adult.
The female cat flea lays fairly large eggs, 1mm in length, oval, translucent and white. She lays about 1000 eggs and although they are slightly sticky the eggs invariably fall off the host and into bedding areas and 2-3 days later hatch. White, legless larvae appear and start feeding on a variety of materials, including any animal protein debris they can find. Especially the blood rich excreta of the adult fleas. The flea larvae shed their skins 2-3 times over a 3 to 4 week period, eventually spinning a flimsy, silken cocoon near their feeding area. This may be in the cracks of floorboards in houses and is often in the bedding of the host animal.
The adult flea usually starts to appear from the pupae within about a month. Both male and female feed off the host which need not be cats but can be small rodents, dogs and small mammals, although the female adult cat flea needs the blood of it’s true host to lay viable eggs. It is not adverse for them to feed off humans, generally around the ankles and lower legs.
Diet: the adults flea feeds off the blood of it’s host. It will also feed off dogs, small rodents and possibly any other small mammals. It is also known for them to feed off humans.
Problems associated with Cat Fleas: Cat fleas will try to feed off any warm-blooded animal. Some people are bothered by the sensation of fleas walking on their skin. But bites are the major nuisance. Bites tend to be concentrated on the lower legs but can occur on other parts of the body. The bite consists of a small, central red spot, surrounded by a red halo, usually without excessive swelling. Fleabites usually cause minor itching but may become increasingly irritating to people with sensitive or reactive skin. Some people and pets suffer from fleabite allergic dermatitis., characterised by intense itching, hair loss, reddening of skin and secondary infection. Just one bite may initiate an allergic reaction, and itching may persist up to 5 days after the bite. Cat fleas may also serve as intermediary hosts of dog tapeworms. Cats or dogs may acquire this intestinal parasite while grooming themselves by ingesting adult fleas that contain a cyst of the tapeworm.

Take action: Call in a professional pest control company to target the problem and eradicate ticks and fleas from your home.

Choosing the right Pest Control Company

Pest problems come up all the time in this area due to the climate and other influencing factors. So as locals of Santa Barbara we have to put up with it, we are lucky to have such a lovely climate. But that still means we get pests and probably always will, the question is what is the best way to get rid of them and how and who does that.
It isn’t an easy choice, the first question is whether you do it yourself or do you hire a professional pest controller? If you do it yourself, then it is clearly cheaper in the short term but the issue is all about whether you can exterminate all of those pests or do you kill 80%-90% and that unfortunately is not enough. As they breed pretty fast and will come back and maybe with a vengeance.
So my advice is to call a professional as the work is guaranteed and all those pests will be gone or you call the company back. But take your time choosing a company as there a lot to choose from.
Look for a company with a reputation and someone who understands what you want to achieve and is professional. This is very important.
Think about these critical points before you employ a pest controller;
  1. Does the company and technicians have the right licences and a current licence. Contact your state Pesticide Regulatory Office
  2. Does the company keep up with regulatory changes?
  3. Do the technicians keep informed of regulatory changes?
  4. Is Intergrated Pest Management part of their process?
  5. Is there on staff a entomologist that is certified?
  6. How are new technicians trained?
  7. Has the company been established in the area for very long?
  8. Are they reputable, do they have recommendations?
